New life for old buildings: Inside Hastings Architecture’s renovated office in the former Ben West Library
By Carol Smith and Martin B. Cherry for Nashville Business Journal

As Nashville continues on its explosive growth trajectory and cranes dot the sky, the new construction changes our landscape from the ground up. But, what of Nashville’s old buildings? Sometimes they are torn down to make way, and sometimes they get a gutting, new polish, and a new life. Such is the story of the former Ben West Library on the edge of downtown.

In April 2019, HASTINGS moved into their newly renovated offices in the former library. The project serves as a great example of adaptive reuse. Built in 1965, the former library had been sitting empty for most of the time since 2001 when the city built a new library, a little farther down Church St. In 2015, the property was granted a Historic Landmark designation. And, in 2017 HASTINGS purchased the building with an eye for turning it into their own office space.

Nashville Business Journal toured the building with architect and interior designer Kate O’Neil. Click here to view the slideshow and read the full story.
